Yes, a credit card is recorded in the Centrale des Crédits aux Particuliers, Belgium's Individual Credit Register, even if you no longer use it. A late payment becomes a payment default only after a delay set by law. The registration then lasts a year after regularisation, ten years without it.
Does the Individual Credit Register record a credit card?
Yes, as soon as it opens a credit line. The register is run by the National Bank of Belgium (NBB). It records consumer credits and mortgage loans taken out by consumers for private purposes, according to Wikifin, the public financial education programme.
"Blacklisted" is the everyday word. The register has two parts: contracts in progress, and payment defaults. A deferred-debit card with a credit facility, such as the Beobank Visa Classic, falls under the first part from signature. Rate checked with the issuer on 30 September 2026: €5 annual fee, APR 14.49%, borrowing rate 13.98% on a €2,150 credit facility.
The NBB says it plainly in its FAQ: a credit card is a credit line, and its limit stays recorded even if you no longer use it.
In the files I handled, the surprise almost always came from the same line. A card forgotten in a drawer, never cancelled, whose limit still weighed on a new credit application.
A pure deferred-debit card is another case. The basic KBC card costs €0 a year, with no APR in normal use, and its Flex Budget option shows an APR of 9.35% (rate checked with the issuer on 28 September 2026). I found no written NBB position on registering a card that has no credit option. Ask for your overview to find out: the answer is free.
When does a late payment on a card become a payment default?
Not on day one. For a credit facility, the criterion given by Credit2Consumer, citing article VII.148 of the Code de droit économique (the Belgian Code of Economic Law), is an amount due that has stayed unpaid, in whole or in part, for three months. Reread the article in Book VII before relying on it in a letter: I could not check the consolidated text on the day of writing.
The lender, for its part, must record the default within eight working days of establishing it, according to the NBB guide.
Take the Beobank Visa Classic. The minimum monthly payment is one eighteenth or one twentieth of the balance used, depending on the size of the line, with a floor of €25. On a balance of €900, one eighteenth is €50. If you pay nothing, interest runs at the borrowing rate of 13.98%: about €10.50 a month. Over twelve months, that is about €126 of interest on that balance alone.
| Event | Consequence |
|---|---|
| A minimum monthly payment is not made | Reminders from the issuer, fees and interest provided by the contract |
| The amount due stays unpaid for three months | The payment default is established |
| The default is established | Recorded by the lender within eight working days |
| First registration as a default | Personal notification to the consumer |
Since the law of 31 July 2023, some unauthorised overdrafts on a current account are recorded after one month only. That rule targets the account, not the card, and I mention it so as not to suggest that three months applies everywhere.
How long do you stay registered?
One year after regularisation, ten years without it. Those are the NBB periods, and they do not change with the issuer.
| Situation | Length of registration |
|---|---|
| Contract repaid with no incident | Deleted at the latest 3 months and 8 days after it ends |
| Default regularised | 1 year from the regularisation |
| Default never regularised | 10 years from the first default |
| Card unused but not cancelled | Credit line still recorded |
The lender must report the repayment within eight days, according to the same FAQ. After that report, the trace of the default stays in the register for another year.
The figure to keep: ten years. It is the maximum length of a default that nobody settled, and it runs from the first missed payment, not the last.
Does a card at zero that was never cancelled stay recorded?
Yes. The line exists as long as the issuer has not closed it, and the NBB states that the data is deleted automatically once the card is cancelled at your request. The procedure, the deadlines and the registered letter are detailed in the article on cancelling a credit card.
How do you consult your record and correct a mistake?
Free of charge, and without going through your bank. The NBB offers four routes: online, by email with a copy of both sides of your identity card, by signed letter, or at the counter in Brussels. Nothing is given out over the phone.
The overview shows the lender's name, the contract reference, the credit amount and, where relevant, any defaults. It shows current contracts only, not the history.
Wrong data is corrected with the lender that sent it, never with the NBB. If the lender accepts the error, it has to rectify. The mistake I saw most often was a repayment that had been made but reported late, and the document that settled it was always the same: the dated bank transfer.
If no answer comes, write a dated complaint. It opens the way to Ombudsfin, the financial services ombudsman. It issues a free, non-binding opinion, and it sets aside over-indebtedness when no fault on the institution's part can be shown.

At the end of 2020, 52.5% of defaulting contracts were credit facilities
At the end of 2020, 315,165 people had at least one payment default in the register, or 3.2% of the population, according to the NBB statistical publication. Defaulting contracts numbered 452,890, of which 237,837 were credit facilities.
The figure covers all credit facilities, not cards alone. But a card with a carried balance is one, and lateness settles in with no fixed instalment to announce it. At the end of 2023, the NBB counted 265,651 people in default, according to DH, a Belgian daily.
What can you do before a late payment becomes a default?
Write before the third month, through a channel that dates your message. I give no personalised advice on a debt, and nothing on this site replaces a service that studies your budget.
Three doors exist. The issuer's customer service, in writing, to ask for a repayment schedule before the missed instalment. The CPAS of your municipality, the public social welfare centre. And an approved debt mediation service in your region, free of charge, which negotiates with creditors. The FPS Economy, the federal economy ministry, describes the consumer credit framework.
In the files I handled, those who wrote early discussed a plan. Those who waited for the bailiff's letter discussed an amount.
To compare the cost of a carried balance card by card, the ranking of Belgian credit cards, the comparison tool and the selection guide carry the three figures. The article on credit card interest explains how it is calculated, and the one on the interest-free credit card shows why a deferred-debit card does not open the same risk.
