Visa Gold or Mastercard Gold: the network does not set the price, the issuer does. A Gold card costs EUR 5 a year at Beobank and EUR 51 at BNP Paribas Fortis or ING, rates recorded on 27 September 2026. The real gap lies elsewhere: the rate on a carried balance, the cost of a cash withdrawal, and your recourse when a purchase goes wrong.
Visa Gold or Mastercard Gold: which one costs less?
Neither, as such. Visa and Mastercard are networks: they route the payment between the merchant and your bank, and they set neither the annual fee, nor the borrowing rate, nor the withdrawal charge. The issuer writes the fee schedule.
In Belgium the question settles itself anyway. Each issuer in practice sells only one of the two: Beobank offers a Visa Gold, BNP Paribas Fortis and ING a Mastercard Gold. You are not choosing a network. You are choosing a bank, and with it either a credit agreement or a plain deferred debit.
The logo says nothing about the price.
The few points where the network does matter, acceptance outside Europe or chargeback rules, are covered in the article Visa or Mastercard in Belgium.
How much does a Gold card cost per year in Belgium?
Between EUR 5 and EUR 51 in annual fees at the three issuers checked. The table puts each Gold next to the same issuer's Classic, because that is the comparison your bank puts to you over the phone.
| Card | Annual fee | APR on carried balance | EUR 100 withdrawal | Rate recorded from the issuer on |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Beobank Visa Gold | EUR 5 | 14.49 % | EUR 5.00 | 27 September 2026 |
| Beobank Visa Classic | EUR 5 | 14.49 % | EUR 5.00 | 27 September 2026 |
| BNP Paribas Fortis Mastercard Gold | EUR 51 (EUR 4.25 a month) | not applicable, deferred debit | at least EUR 6.00 | 27 September 2026 |
| BNP Paribas Fortis Visa Classic | EUR 27 (EUR 2.25 a month) | not applicable, deferred debit | at least EUR 6.00 | 27 September 2026 |
| ING Mastercard Gold | EUR 51 (EUR 4.25 a month) | not applicable, deferred debit | EUR 7.00 to EUR 9.00 | 27 September 2026 |
At BNP Paribas Fortis, the Mastercard Gold is included in the Easy Guide current account bundle, up to two credit cards per bundle; the EUR 4.25 monthly fee applies outside the bundle or for an extra card, according to the issuer's card comparison page. ING has billed its cards monthly since 1 January 2026. The annual total has not moved, but the line becomes less visible on a statement.
What APR applies when you do not repay in full at the end of the month?
At Beobank, 14.49 % on the Gold and on the Classic alike. The APR is the same, the borrowing rate is not: 14.20 % on the Visa Gold, 13.98 % on the Visa Classic, variable rates in force since 9 May 2025 according to the representative examples published by Beobank. The reason lies in the calculation. The APR includes the EUR 5 annual fee, which weighs less on the Gold's example (EUR 3,800 of credit) than on the Classic's (EUR 2,150). For the same APR, the Gold therefore carries a slightly higher interest rate.
Over twelve months, a EUR 1,000 balance left carried forward all year costs EUR 142.00 in interest on the Gold. On the Classic, EUR 139.80. The gap is small, but it runs the wrong way for anyone who thought they were trading up.
In the files I handled, cardholders nearly all knew the APR from the advert. The borrowing rate printed on their statement, almost none. Yet that is the rate that produces the month's interest.
The minimum repayment on the Beobank Visa Gold is one eighteenth of the amount used, with a EUR 25 floor. On a EUR 3,800 line fully drawn, the minimum monthly payment rises to EUR 213.46 according to the pre-contractual information document. A late payment takes the rate to 15.62 % on the unpaid capital, with EUR 7.50 per reminder letter, one reminder a month at most.
The Mastercard Gold cards of BNP Paribas Fortis and ING work differently: the month's statement is taken in full from the current account, with no interest, so no APR. To spread repayments at BNP Paribas Fortis, you need to add Optiline, a separate credit line linked to the card, with a minimum repayment of 5.60 % of the balance each month. Both contracts then fall under Book VII of the Belgian Code of Economic Law, the national consumer credit framework, and the maximum APRs are set by the Royal Decree of 14 September 2016 and published by the Federal Public Service Economy.
How much does a EUR 100 withdrawal cost with a Gold card?
EUR 5.00 at Beobank, EUR 7.00 or EUR 9.00 at ING, at least EUR 6.00 at BNP Paribas Fortis. The Gold changes nothing on this line: the Beobank Visa Gold charges 2.50 % of the amount withdrawn, with a EUR 5 minimum and a EUR 15 maximum, and the ING Mastercard Gold charges EUR 6 plus 1 % at ING machines, EUR 8 plus 1 % elsewhere.
Over twelve months, one EUR 100 withdrawal a month with the ING Mastercard Gold at another bank's machine adds up to EUR 108.00, twice the annual fee. On a card backed by a credit line like Beobank's, interest is added for as long as the balance is not repaid in full, which the pre-contractual document states in plain terms.
Outside the euro area, the foreign exchange fee is 2.10 % at Beobank, 2 % at ING and 1.60 % on the BNP Paribas Fortis fee list. The issuer-by-issuer detail is in the article on cash withdrawal with a credit card.

What do you pay extra when moving from Classic to Gold?
At BNP Paribas Fortis, EUR 24 a year. At Beobank, nothing. The difference is written in the contract, not in the fee, and it fits in a few lines:
- a higher limit, EUR 5,000 a month instead of EUR 2,500 at BNP Paribas Fortis, and a credit line of up to EUR 10,000 at Beobank
- extra insurance, four policies instead of two at BNP Paribas Fortis, three instead of two at Beobank, which adds a one-year extended warranty on household appliances and computer equipment
- no reduction in the borrowing rate, the withdrawal charge or the foreign exchange fee
A higher limit has a downside the brochure does not highlight: it is also the amount a fraudster can spend between the theft of the card and your call to Card Stop, Belgium's national card-blocking line.
Does a Gold card's fraud insurance really protect you?
Rarely beyond EUR 50. The "fraudulent use" insurance on the BNP Paribas Fortis Mastercard Gold covers the excess left for you to pay after a fraudulent transaction. That excess is already capped by law: article 74 of Directive (EU) 2015/2366, known as PSD2 and transposed into Book VII, limits your share to EUR 50 for transactions made before the card was blocked, unless you acted with gross negligence or fraudulently.
The insurance excludes exactly those cases. Its terms rule out intentional fault and complicity, with an example given by the issuer itself: keeping the card and its PIN together in an unsecured place. That is the textbook scenario issuers classify as gross negligence.
I never saw this cover change the outcome of a fraud file. The disagreement was always about gross negligence, and that is where the insurance stops.
Goods not delivered: dispute the charge or file an insurance claim?
Dispute first, with the card issuer. A chargeback runs through the Visa or Mastercard network rules, and Belgian issuers in practice apply an in-house deadline of about three months, set out in the article on chargeback in Belgium. The Gold card insurance comes afterwards, on its own terms: at Beobank, the Safe online cover only steps in once no solution has been found with the seller, for goods of at least EUR 50 bought in the European Union or the United States, up to EUR 1,250 per claim and per year.
In the files I handled, the saddest case was always the same. The cardholder wrote to the insurer first, waited six weeks for an answer, then found out that the dispute deadline had kept running in the meantime and that the bank could no longer claim anything back from the merchant.
The issuer looks at two dates first: the promised delivery date and the date you reported the problem. Everything else comes after.
| Situation | First contact | Condition to check | Recourse if refused |
|---|---|---|---|
| Online purchase not delivered | the issuer, through a dispute | report as soon as the delivery date has passed | Ombudsfin, the financial services ombudsman |
| Same purchase, dispute refused | the Gold card insurer | at least EUR 50, paid in full with the card | Insurance Ombudsman |
| Charge you did not authorise | Card Stop on 078 170 170, then the issuer | report without delay, thirteen months at most | Ombudsfin |
| Purchased item stolen or broken | the Gold card insurer | 120 days at BNP Paribas Fortis, 200 days at Beobank | Insurance Ombudsman |
Two ombudsmen, two separate files. A complaint against the insurer sent to Ombudsfin goes nowhere, and the reverse is true as well.
Cancelling or downgrading the Gold: what happens to the cover?
It ends, including for what you have already bought. BNP Paribas Fortis says so on its Mastercard Gold page: membership of the insurance ends when the card is not renewed or is cancelled, and cover also lapses for goods paid for with it before. A television bought in January and covered for 120 days is no longer covered if the Gold is replaced by a Classic in March.
Cancellation itself, notice period, pro rata refund of the fee and the effect on the Central Individual Credit Register kept by the National Bank of Belgium, is covered in the article on how to cancel a credit card.
Three figures to ask for before moving to Gold
The annual fee in euros, the borrowing rate applied to a carried balance (not just the APR), and the cost of a EUR 100 cash withdrawal. If your adviser cannot give them in a minute, the pre-contractual information document contains all three.
Add a fourth question, the one nobody asks: which insurer covers the card, and which ombudsman handles a refusal. The ranking of Belgian credit cards sets out these amounts card by card, the comparison tool puts them side by side, and the choosing a credit card page sorts them by use.
