Deferred debit adds up all of a month's purchases and charges them in one go to your current account, on a date set by the issuer. It is not a credit as long as you pay the statement in full. At KBC, the statement of spending goes out around the 20th of the month, and the charge falls on the 1st of the next month.
What exactly is deferred debit?
It is a payment delay, not a loan. You pay with the card, the merchant is settled, and your bank waits for a fixed date to ask you for the money.
Test-Achats puts it plainly: when everything has to be repaid on receipt of the monthly statement, it is "not really a credit card, but rather a deferred-debit card". Wikifin, for its part, files Visa, Mastercard or American Express cards among credit lines. Both readings hold. It all depends on what your contract allows.
For the law, the key is in Book VII of the Belgian Code of Economic Law. A credit repayable in one go, interest-free and short-term, falls outside the consumer credit regime (article VII.3). Deferred debit paid on time is exactly that.
Immediate debit, deferred debit, credit: what is the difference?
Three mechanisms, constantly confused, told apart by a single question: when does the money leave your account, and can you keep part of it?
| Mechanism | When the money leaves | Interest | Carry-over possible |
|---|---|---|---|
| Immediate debit | Instantly or nearly, purchase by purchase | None | No |
| Deferred debit | Once a month, on a fixed date, for the whole month | None if paid in full | Only if the contract provides for it |
| Credit (credit line) | A minimum instalment, the rest stays due | Yes, on the carried-over balance | Yes, by design |
One card can combine two rows of this table. KBC's basic credit card is a deferred debit, with an instalment option, Flex Budget, that opens the third row.
On what date is the amount really charged?
On the contract date, never the purchase date. The purchase itself is authorised straight away: the bank checks the limit, reserves the sum, then the merchant submits the transaction a few days later. Three moments, three dates: authorisation, entry on the statement, actual charge.
At KBC, the page for the Flex Budget option, read on 4 October 2026, gives the schedule: the statement of spending goes out around the 20th of the month, the monthly account is sent on the 1st of the next month, and the amount is charged that day. A purchase on 5 September is therefore charged on 1 October, 26 days later. A purchase on 21 September, which falls after the 20th statement, waits for 1 November: 41 days. The second calculation is mine, deduced from that schedule, to be checked against your own contract.
In the files I handled, the question was almost never "what is it". It was "why the 1st, when I paid on the 21st". The cardholder believed the card gave them 30 days from the purchase. It gave them between 26 and 41, depending on the day.
Does deferred debit cost interest?
No, if you pay everything. Yes, as soon as part of the balance stays. Carrying over is a feature of the contract, not of deferred debit itself.
The figure to remember: at Beobank, the Visa Classic costs €5 a year and shows a TAEG (Belgium's APR) of 14.49%, for a variable borrowing rate of 13.98% on a sample credit line of €3,000. Tariff read at the issuer on 4 October 2026. Repayment is in one go, or by a minimum instalment of 1/18 of the amount used, with a floor of €25.
On €1,000 spent, the minimum is €55.56. That leaves €944.44 carried over, which produces about €10 of interest in the first month (my own calculation, at 13.98%). If you only pay that minimum, recalculated each month, with no new purchase, about €574 remains after twelve months, for €103 of interest paid (my own simulation).
| Card | Annual fee | Mode | TAEG | Tariff read on |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Beobank, Visa Classic | €5 | Credit line, carry-over possible | 14.49% (borrowing rate 13.98%) | 04/10/2026 |
| KBC, basic credit card | €0 (assumption in the TAEG on the KBC page) | Deferred debit, carry-over via the Flex Budget option | 9.35% (borrowing rate 8.97%), only if the option is activated | 04/10/2026 |
At KBC, Flex Budget requires an instalment of at least 5.6% of the unpaid balance: €56 on €1,000. The figures in this table come from each issuer's official page. They change: the only one that counts is the one in your contract, on the date you signed it.

How do you recognise a deferred-debit card in a contract?
The commercial name does not say. A Visa or Mastercard does not work the same way from one issuer to the next. Four lines have to be read:
- the charge date, or the formula that sets it ("the first day of the month", "on receipt of the statement");
- whether a minimum instalment exists: if so, a carry-over is possible, so there is a rate;
- the TAEG, with its worked example: a contract with no TAEG in principle offers no carry-over;
- the date the tariff was read at the issuer, without which no figure can be compared.
The brochure does not put forward the line that talks about carrying over, and it is almost never the one that carries the word "deferred".
Can you dispute a purchase before the charge date?
Yes, and it is the best moment. As long as the charge has not happened, the issuer can set the disputed line apart from the statement: write to it before the date, in writing, dating your letter.
The issuer looks first at two dates: that of the transaction and that of your report. For an unauthorised transaction, the law gives you thirteen months at most after the debit (article VII.41 of the Code of Economic Law), but every week of waiting counts against you in the file. Cases of a failed merchant, a double charge or a subscription not cancelled follow the procedure described in the article on chargeback in Belgium.
What happens if the account is empty on the charge date?
I cannot tell you what your contract provides: it sets the fees and the late-payment interest. In the disputes department, I saw the same sequence: a rejected charge, a written reminder, the contract's fees, and a file that got harder when the cardholder had said nothing beforehand.
Contact the issuer before the date, in writing. If the statement becomes hard to pay, an accredited debt mediation service or the CPAS (the public social welfare centre) of your municipality will help free of charge. Whether you are entered in the Central Individual Credit Register (Centrale des Crédits aux Particuliers, run by the National Bank of Belgium) depends on the nature of the contract: see the article on the credit register. In case of a dispute over a statement, Ombudsfin, the Belgian financial-sector ombudsman, is approached only after a written complaint to the issuer.

To compare cards on their figures rather than their promises, the ranking of Belgian credit cards, the comparison tool and the choose your card page start from the same tariffs. The full mechanism of a card is described in the article on how a credit card works, the distinction between interest and TAEG in the one on APR vs borrowing rate, and the hotel deposit in the one on the card hold for car rental.
