No, not automatically. A credit card debt does not vanish at death: it enters the estate. Heirs answer for it with their own assets only if they accept the estate purely and simply. With benefit of inventory, they pay only up to what the estate holds. By renouncing, they pay nothing. The bank blocks the card as soon as it is told.
Do heirs have to repay a deceased person's credit card?
Not by default. Death does not make anyone a debtor in the cardholder's place. It turns the debt into an item of the estate, and the heir decides what to do with that estate.
Book 4 of the Civil Code (the Belgian Code civil), introduced by the law of 19 January 2022, says it from article 4.2: the person called to inherit takes the status of heir by accepting the estate. No acceptance, no status as heir. The card contract itself remains under Book VII of the Code de droit économique (the Belgian Code of Economic Law), as in the article on a late credit card payment.
In the files I handled, families wrote to "cancel the card" and thought it wiped the balance. Cancelling a card erases nothing. The balance follows the estate, with or without the plastic.
A pure deferred-debit card, settled in full every month, has no credit line: only the last statement remains to be paid. See the article on deferred debit.
What happens to the card once the bank learns of the death?
It is blocked, and what counts is the notification, not the date of death. CBC writes that cards in the deceased's name are blocked and deleted as soon as it is informed, and that direct debits linked to blocked accounts are deleted. Belfius states that the law requires it to block accounts temporarily, stop direct debits and block payment and credit cards.
No transaction is possible without the agreement of all heirs, Belfius adds. Payments ordered before the death with a later execution date are still carried out, according to CBC.
The monthly statement, for its part, still arrives in principle, with the purchases made before the death. It carries the deceased's name and it worries people: it was the letter families opened last.
If the card has gone missing or a third party is using it, the stop goes through Card Stop on +32 78 170 170, as explained in the article on what Card Stop does.
How much does a card balance cost if it is left open after a death?
It depends on the card, and nobody says so in the letter of condolence. Rates checked with the issuer on 21 October 2026, on each bank's public pages.
| Card | Annual fee | APR | Rate checked on | Monthly interest on €1,800 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Beobank Visa Classic | €5 | 14.49% on €2,150, rate as at 09/05/2025 | 21/10/2026 | €20.41 |
| KBC credit card with Flex Budget | €0 (assumption behind the published APR) | 9.35%, variable borrowing rate 8.97% | 21/10/2026 | €13.46 |
Author's calculations, 21 October 2026, APR converted to a monthly rate of 1.134% at Beobank and 0.748% at KBC. Over twelve months, that is €244.95 or €161.49 of interest on those €1,800, if the contract rate is still running.
That "if" is the limit of this article. I read the general conditions of the Beobank credit facility, which carry no version date. They contain no clause on the death of the holder: the only automatic loss of the benefit of the term concerns bankruptcy or insolvency. KBC's Flex Budget page does not mention death either. Neither says the interest stops, neither says it continues.
The issuer looks first at the death certificate and the identity of the heirs. Ask it in writing for a statement closed at the date of death and the rate applied since.

Accept, accept with benefit of inventory or renounce: what happens to the debt?
The debt follows the choice, and the choice is recorded before a notary. Wikifin (page updated 13 April 2026), the Belgian financial education site, describes three options.
| Choice | Card debt | Heir's personal assets | Going back |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pure and simple acceptance | Paid, including beyond the estate | Mixed with the deceased's | In principle no |
| Acceptance with benefit of inventory | Paid up to the value of the estate | Kept apart from the estate | No: it is still an acceptance |
| Renunciation | None | No assets received either | In principle no |
A notary draws up the inventory. Renunciation is also declared before a notary. It is free if the estate does not exceed €6,664.95 since 1 August 2026 (Belga, 31 July 2026, quoting the Federation of Notaries). Above that, expect fees I have not found.
Once the renunciation is recorded, the deceased's creditors can no longer claim payment from the heirs: giving them a copy of the deed is enough, according to the notaries (article of 26 November 2023). The same article mentions a theoretical thirty years to renounce. I would not rely on it: the estate declaration is due within four months if the death occurred in Belgium (five months elsewhere in Europe, six outside Europe), and acts carried out in the meantime can amount to a choice.
Which moves on the deceased's account count as acceptance?
Those that treat the deceased's money as yours. The notaries cite a transfer from the deceased's account to the heir's own. CBC writes that an amount withdrawn or transferred beyond the legal maximum is deducted from the surviving spouse's share in the joint estate, and that this also counts as accepting the estate.
To avoid before you have chosen:
- transferring or withdrawing money from the deceased's account for yourself;
- withdrawing, for the surviving spouse, more than half of the blocked balances, capped at €5,000 per institution (Belfius and CBC);
- signing a payment arrangement with the issuer without speaking to the notary.
Still allowed: paying everyday expenses from your own funds, and having some invoices paid from the blocked accounts where the law permits, including the undertaker's (CBC). I do not rule on whether paying the card debt yourself amounts to acceptance. Put the question to the notary before paying.
Can an outstanding balance insurance wipe out the debt?
Yes, if one exists and covers that line. Outstanding balance insurance repays part or all of the remaining capital on death, according to Cofidis (page of May 2022). It is common for a mortgage and much rarer for consumer credit. Heirs must make the claim themselves.
I found no death cover attached to the two cards in the table. Look for an insurance contract signed at the same time as the card: it sits in the papers of the credit facility.
What should you do, in order, on finding an open card?
Four moves, in writing, before paying anything.
- Tell the issuer of the death with the certificate, and ask for a statement of the balance at the date of death, with the rate applied.
- Gather the mail, the last twelve months of statements and any linked insurance contract.
- See a notary to choose between the three options, before any movement on the accounts.
- Do not answer a collector by phone: ask for the statement and keep the letter.
A formal notice from a third party in the deceased's name is common and, in the files I handled, it rarely added anything the contract did not allow. The conditions under which the balance becomes payable at once are detailed in the article on the acceleration clause.
What if the issuer claims a sum you dispute?
A written complaint to the issuer's complaints department, first. If the answer does not suit you, Ombudsfin examines the file free of charge, and its opinion is not binding on the bank.
